Material Properties of Mild Steel

in Steel

Mild Steel is one of the most commonly found types of Steel which has emerged as an indispensable material for many Industries. The Mild Steel has low Carbon content and has many materialistic and mechanical properties that make it suitable for many applications. The Mild Steel is available in the market under different specifications to suit the diverse requirements. There are several brands of Mild Steel that are introduced into the market by competent companies. Many classify Mild Steel as Steel that is formed into bars by cold rolling.

The properties of a material are determined by its composition. The material properties and mechanical characteristics of Mild Steel are crucial in deciding the area of application. These properties of the Mild Steel are determined by a series of tests. The popularity of Mild Steel in many Industries is mainly because the material is easy to work with. A few physical properties of the Mild Steel are given below.

The Mild Steel is highly malleable due to the low Carbon content. As a result, the Steel is as pliable as clay and so can be rolled and formed as required. This property enables the Mild Steel to be formed into bars.

  • High malleability

This implies that the Steel can be bent into any shape or form without breaking.

  • High ductility

Mild Steel is essentially Steel which is a composition of Iron and Carbon. The Carbon content in the Mild Steel is extremely low. The Steel series are characterized by 4 digit numbers such as 1005, 1025 etc. The last two digits in the number are an indication of the Carbon content in that Steel. For example, Steel series with the number 1005 will have 0.05 percent Carbon. There are even other types of Steel that fall under the group of Mild Steel due to their low Carbon content.

Tempering or hardening of the Mild Steel is not possible since the low Carbon content prevents the formation of crystalline structure.

The composition of the Mild Steel imparts various properties which make it ideal for many applications across Industries. They are used extensively in construction for reinforcements and support structures. Mild Steel is also used in Automobile Industries. The various components for machinery are also fabricated with Mild Steel. The Mild Steel is available at reasonable rates in the market provided one gets in touch with a reliable manufacturers who can offer the right deal.
